What Are Double-Hung Windows?
A double hung window has two sashes (moving panels of glass) that slide up and down. You can open one sash at a time or open both partially at the same time.
Double hung windows can be in one or multiple bays (with each bay consisting of two sashes). Sash restrictions can be requested if required (a sash restriction will either prevent a panel from being able to open or simply restrict how far it can be opened).
Advantages
- Ventilation: When both the top and bottom panel are open, warmer air escapes from the top opening while the bottom opening allows cooler air in.
- No projection: This means that there is no risk of accidentally opening the window onto somebody walking past, making them perfect for use near patios, walkways or decking.
- Screening: they are easily screened with the screen fitting on the exterior of the window.
Disadvantages
- More expensive than other window types. Fairly high cost.
- Over time the springs can wear out (or in situations where the window is exposed to a lot of weather the springs can rust), creating operational problems down the track.
