bifold windows

Back to Types of Windows

Bifold windows consist of multiple panels of glass hinged together which run on a track and can be opened up in a concertina style to make a large, uninterrupted opening.  They’re a popular choice for servery windows.

Advantages:

  • Maximum clear opening: Bifold windows allow pretty much the entire size of the window to be open, making them great for servery windows and maximising air flow.

Disadvantages:

  • Cost: Bifold windows are the most expensive type of window.
  • Protrusion: Open panels protrude to the interior or exterior of the building. If they protrude to the exterior, they can create a hazard that can be bumped into. If they protrude to the interior (a less common option) they can limit what hardware or furniture you can place in the operational path of the window. Also, if the panels protrude to the interior the window must be used in a protected (undercover) situation as the window will no longer comply to Australian Water Penetration Resistance standards.
  • Screening:  The design makes it difficult and expensive to screen. To screen this product, you will have to go to a specialist screen company.
  • Warranty: suppliers will not provide a warranty unless they install the product, which can be quite expensive.
