Pros and Cons of Awning Windows
Awning windows are hinged at the top and usually have a chain winder mechanism which allows for the bottom of the window to be opened approximately 300mm. Other options without the chain winder will allow for the window to be opened more than this but please contact us for details. They can have multiple panels (see pictures for examples or view the size chart below).
Advantages
- Keeps rain out: The rain runs off open awning windows, allowing fresh air in and keeping the weather out (the open awning panel acts as an awning over the opening, hence the name).
- Easily screened: Awning windows with chain winders are easily screened.
Disadvantages
- Air flow: Poor air flow compared to other window types
- Cost: More expensive than sliding windows. Moderate cost.
- Screens (non-chain winders): Awning windows without chain winders cannot be screened.
- Protrusion: Panels protrude to the exterior when open. If used in high traffic areas such as walkways or patios they can present a potential bump hazard.
